The Coaching Legacy of Tom Landry

The NFL Dallas Cowboys, ?America?s Team?, have been a success on and off the field for more than 30 years. They are a fan favorite in the state of Texas, all over the USA and internationally, as well. It is the play on and off the field, and the individuals who have contributed to that play, that is at the heart of the Cowboys great success.

Through its franchise history, the Dallas Cowboys have had a number of all-stars whose skills and achievements have created legends and contributed to Dallas Cowboys history. Endless players have donned the single star and blue and white jerseys of the Dallas Cowboys and taken to the field at Texas Stadium. In so doing, some of them, such as Bob Lilly, Roger Staubach, and Tony Dorsett have become legends.

The Dallas Cowboys are one of the most successful teams in the history of the National Football League and hold numerous league records, thanks to these players and countless others over the years. It is, however, not just the players that have contributed to the success of the cowboys it is also those who walk the sidelines at each practice and game. Tom Landry was one such man. Indeed, he walked the sidelines as Dallas Cowboys coach for a remarkable twenty-nine years.

During Landry?s reign as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys from the start of the franchise in 1960 through to his departure in 1989, the team established a number of records. One such record is the most consecutive winning seasons ? 20 in all ? from 1966 to 1985. Additionally, under Landry?s reign the Cowboys were Super Bowl Champions two times. The list of team records, part of Dallas Cowboys history, established under Landry?s reign goes on and on.

Tom Landry, a Texas native, attended the University of Texas before interrupting his education to serve in the U.S Army Air Forces during World War II. Upon returning from the war he returned to university where he played fullback and defensive back on the Texas Longhorns' New Year's Day bowl game winners in 1948 and 1949. From 1949 through 1955, Landry played defensive back in the NFL where in 1954 he was selected as an all-pro. In his last two years as a player he also took on the duties of assistant coach. In just 80 games Landry had 32 interceptions. At the start of the 1956 season, Landry turned to full time coaching duties as defensive coordinator with the New York Giants (his last team as a player). The offensive coordinator for the team was none other than Vince Lombardi. Under the guidance of these two men the Giants made three appearances in the NFL Championship from 1956 to 1959.

In 1960 Landry became the first head coach of the newly established franchise Dallas Cowboys ? a job he would hold for 29 seasons (1960-88). The first few years for the Cowboys were rough but Landry?s hard work and determination slowly paid off as they posted 10 wins in the 1966 season and made it to the NFL championship game. Dallas lost the game but it was the start of what would be their 20 year span of winning seasons.

During Tom Landry?s tenure, the Dallas Cowboys became Super Bowl Champions twice (1972, 1978), won 5 NFC titles, 13 Divisional titles, and Landry compiled the 3rd most wins of all time for an NFL coach with a 270-178-6 record. His 20 career playoff victories are the most of any coach in NFL history. One of the most impressive accomplishments is his record for coaching a team to 20 consecutive winning seasons (1966-1985), an NFL record, and one of the longest winning streaks in professional sports.

Landry brought many new innovations to the game during his coaching days in the NFL. During his time as the New York Giants defensive coordinator, Tom Landry revolutionized the defensive game with the introduction of the now-popular 4-3 Defense. It featured four down lineman (two ends and two defensive tackles on either side of the offensive center) and three linebackers ? middle, left, and right. Landry?s innovation was the middle linebacker who he had stand up and move back two yards Previously, a lineman had been placed over the center. Landry also invented and popularized the use of keys (analyzing offensive tendencies) to determine what the offense might do. Vince Lombardi, coach of the Green Packers at the time Landry was hired as Dallas Cowboys coach had implemented a ?Run to Daylight idea, where rather than a specific assigned hole, the running back went to an open space,. Landry decided that the way to stop it was to take away daylight and thus he refined his own 4-3 defense thereby creating the ?Flex Defense? - a defense that altered its alignment to counter what the offense might do. The Flex Defense was also innovative in that it was a zone defense against the run as each defender was responsible for a given gap area, and was to stay in that area before they knew where the play was going.

After inventing the Flex Defense, Landry invented an offense to score on it as he revived the man-in-motion and the shotgun formation. Landry's biggest contribution in this area was the use of pre-shifting where the offense would shift from one formation to the other before the snap of the ball. Although this tactic was not new, it had been around since the turn of the 20th Century, Landry was the first coach to use the approach on a regular basis the idea being to break the keys the defense used to determine what the offense might do.

Known as a quiet, religious man, Landry took everything in stride and was unfazed by all the hype surrounding Cowboys football and America?s Team. Landry?s twenty-nine years with the team came to an end shortly before the 1989 season when the Cowboys were sold to Jerry Jones. Landry was replaced by Jimmy Johnson, Jerry Jones? former teammate at the University of Arkansas. The unceremonious dismissal of Landry is, to this day, regarded as a classless, disrespectful act on the part of Jones. Landry was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame less than two years after his last game. In 1993 Landry was inducted into the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor at Texas Stadium.

Tom Landry died of leukemia at the age of 75 in Dallas on February 12, 2000. The Dallas Cowboys wore a patch depicting Landry's trademark fedora on their uniforms during the 2000 season to honor this icon of Dallas Cowboys history. Tom Landry?s vision and ideas transformed the many stars of the Cowboys into legends. He himself left behind a great legacy with the Dallas Cowboys and the National Football League at large.

How to Survive Game Time At Your Child's Next Birthday Party

The Birthday Dad ShipponyHere are a few tips to help you survive the birthday games portion of your child's next party.

Here are a few tips to help you survive the birthday games portion of your child's next party.

Every kid birthday party is different.

Indoors, outdoors, five guests, fifty-five guests, boys, girls, Army theme, Princess Theme. But one thing's for sure - at some point they'll be playing birthday GAMES.

Now, I'll decorate, I'll bake, I'll wrap all the gifts and hand-deliver all the invitations. Heck, I'll even clean up after everyone leaves.

Just don't put me in front of a throng of kids when it comes time to entertain them!

At least that was my initial reaction when first faced with the BIG question - how am I going to survive an entire hour (at least) trying to entertain a mob of children at my daughter's birthday party?

I had two options:

Either PAY an arm and a leg and have a professional entertainer do it for you.

Or, take a deep breath, prepare myself as best I could and do it myself (and risk the loss of an arm and a leg in the process.).

If you're a devout adventurer and choose the latter (like I did), here are a few observations (e.g., survival tips) that may come in handy next time you take on the challenge:

Prepare in Advance

During the party you'll have so much on your mind that it's best to prepare as much as possible in advance. Make a list of birthday games and write them down in the order you plan to play them. If any of the birthday games involve music (like musical chairs, hot potato, etc.), prepare the music ahead of time with the stops so that you don't have to deal with it during the party.

At www.coolest-kid-birthday-parties youll find the BIG list of Kid Birthday Games with over 200 birthday game ideas (way more than you'll ever need.) organized into easy-to-find categories and themes, but...

Not Too Many Birthday Games

Don't be tempted to play fifty birthday games in sixty minutes. Kids'll usually become bored quickly if they are asked to play too many games. You'll need only a handful of birthday games, so choose those that fit your party theme, and.

Stick to the Classic Birthday Games

Creative and original birthday games are fun, but they may also be a bit risky because the kids are required to learn something new. I'm not saying DON'T play new games, just make sure there are a few classics in your arsenal. Musical Chairs, Hot Potato, Pass the Present, etc., were around when we were children. And they work. So don't be concerned that you'll ore the kids with the usual birthday games. You can always add a special twist to make them look and sound more attractive.

Now that you've got a list of birthday games and the music is ready, how do you make sure the kids participate and have fun?

It's a Birthday Party, Not a Democracy

Avoid asking the kids if they WANT to play any of the birthday games. They may just say NO. Tell them what the next game is - without any questions and without any options or room for deliberation - and make it sound intriguing. For instance, what sounds better?

Who would like to play Hot Potato?

or

Our next contest is Blazing Potato where you can all win some great prizes just by sitting in a circle.

And if they still object.

Be Firm

One child voicing his objection to a certain game can become an instant epidemic. And suddenly you've got a group of little protesters on your hands. The first time this happens, be firm (in a kind sort of way) and just let them understand that they were invited to the party and they need to play. This may sound a bit too harsh for such a fun gathering, but it lets the kids understand that you're in charge and you're not about to let them ruin the fun by sitting out and distracting the others.

And now that you've got everyone ready to play, remember one of the most important factors to making the birthday games work.

Don't Rush

Give the kids ample time to play each of the birthday games and that way you don't need a zillion birthday games. Take Hot Potato for instance. The kids all sit in a circle and the hot potato is being passed around to the sound of music. Let the music play a few beats before it stops. Sometimes, because you may be nervous to get things going, the music is stopped so fast that the kids don't have time to enjoy. Choose music that the children know and can sing along and have them pass the potato under their arms, above their heads, across the circle, etc. Find ways to make it fun and you'll be able to turn this classic into a long-lasting game.

But there's one thing you should beware of.

The 'Danger' of Sit-Out Games

Let's go back to Hot Potato. The kids pass the potato and whoever is stuck with it when the music stops is usually out. And as the game goes on, there are more and more children sitting around just watching (if you're lucky.). And that may translate into trouble. So instead, you can play the game without anyone being out. How? Place a bunch of giveaways in the center of the circle and the child who is stuck with the potato when the music stops gets to choose a prize. This way you also have control over the length of the game because you can finish whenever you like and not when only one kid remains.

(If there's a game in which you can't work around having the kids sit out, turn them into judges and have them help.)

And one last note regarding the..

Prizes

Prizes don't have to be large and expensive. They can be trinkets or sweets. It's the challenge of winning the prize and not the prize itself that most appeals to the kids.

Consider handing out the prizes at the end of the party instead of right away. Show the winner their prize, and just tell them that it'll be put in their favor bag. This way, the prize won't become a distraction during party time. And, at the party's end, everyone gets a prize - the favor bags - so if a few kids have a few more goodies, it really doesn't matter.

Online GamesFragging On The Net

Online games ? spoken casually or formally ? normally refer to video games that are played on a computer using an Internet connection. There are video games that are played online using devices such as video consoles (Playstation, X-Box) and mobile phones, but online games generally mean PC games that can be played only when you are connected to the Internet. These games kicked off in the 1980s even as Internet connectivity was slow and expensive. The earliest versions of these games were simple multiplayer text-based games. In the 1990s these games started getting popular, and today they feature high-end graphics, virtual communities, and lots more.

Types Of Online Games

Online games can be of the following types ? (1) First-person shooters: Here the players battle with each other head-to-head. In most first-person shooters games, there are online components that allow deathmatch/arena style play. In these games the view you see in the gameplay is the one seen from your character's eyes. (2) Real-time strategy games: These are games where you have to develop a combat strategy or gameplan by building resources and making a strong army so that you are able to fight with other Internet players. (3) Browser games: These are simple, small, and quick pastime games that can be played on your browser. They are developed using the popular Shockwave or Java technologies. (4) Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG): These are online games that can support thousands of players from all over the world simultaneously, playing with or against each other in a giant virtual world and also interacting with each other. Here a person has to keep leveling up till he reaches the maximum possible level written for the game. These games can keep a gamer engaged for months or even years!

How Online Games Make Money

Today, every game is playable online. The question before the company that is making these games is how to make money. Most companies make single-player games that can be played at home. In these games the player has to overcome the artificially intelligent enemies. These games feature an online multiplayer gameplay model, using which a user can play with or against other Internet players. These companies make their money by selling their game CDs/DVDs [Examples: Warcraft 3, Counter Strike. The browser game companies survive by revenues generated from advertising and promotions. Many MMORPG companies keep adding content by developing new patches in their games and they charge a monthly fee from the players [Example: Everquest 2, World of Warcraft. Some of them do not, and survive because of their CD/DVD sales [Example: Guild Wars.

One last thing about the title: Fragging in game jargon stands for finishing off a player or an artificially intelligent enemy.

The game being played was soccer, the ancestor of both rugby and American football.

5. With the advent of a national association in England, any soccer played under its jurisdiction was called association football. As time passed the word association was abbreviated to assoc., which eventually gave way to the word soccer, the game's common name in North America.

How to organise a great Stag night for your best mate

For one reason or another, your best mate has got down on one knee and said he'll do the honourable thing. No not to you, to his girlfriend! Their families are filled with joy and excitement as wedding plans are made and then one night he turns round to you and says mate Will you sort out my Stag do?

Honoured and flattered you quickly say yes, but then it dawns on you that you may have actually taken on a bit more responsibility than you originally thought.

The wedding reception may still be great for chatting up bridesmaids and if you have to make a speech - well it'll be kept short, a bit like doing a team meeting at work - rehearse, couple of stiff drinks and it'll be fine. But what about the Stag night?

These days organising a stag night requires more imagination than a night down the local. Whilst a few pints in the pub seems to be ok in an East End soap opera, trying to convince anyone you know that's going to be enough is a different matter.

Stag nights need to be exciting and a bit different. Stag nights need to be something to remember for forever. But where does one begin?

To help organise the right kind of event get together with a few other friends who will be attending and grab a pen and paper. If its going to be a surprise you can't ask the groom, so you're going to need to work out the kind of things he likes as its his day - but do remember to get his measurements for that Lycra Superman outfit your going to make him wear.

You will then need to place some parameters around the event you are organising. Some people decide to book long and expensive Stag Holidays that seem to go on forever but this can put a lot of pressure on the guys attending in terms of getting time off work and then not being able to go away with their family or partner. Or it can place undue financial pressure on people in the form of expensive flights, hotel bills and lost earnings. So a Caribbean Cruises and 2 weeks in Vegas is probably not such a great idea for most people. You want to be inclusive and practical so everyone can have fun - they'll thank you for it.

If you still need some pointers for the event then you may want to break it down into a day event and an evening event so it spreads the fun and puts less pressure on any one activity.

Daytime activities

Some fun things you may want to consider for day-time activities will depend on the type of party you will have, but here are some ideas you may want to consider.

# Paintball where you can pretend to want to kill each other, but use balls of paint instead of bullets. You get to dress up in army style fatigue and play war games. Always a winner!

# 4x4 Off Road Driving - Get to do to someone else's 4 wheel drive what you'd really like to do to yours but don't, because your always thinking about resale value. Drive land rovers off road with an experienced instructor and push them to the max.

# White water rafting - Get soaking wet with your mates while riding the rapids onboard a white water raft. This will get the adrenaline going and its group activity so everyone can join in - plus it's a bit different.

# Sky Diving - Get the groom 10,000 feet in the air and then watch him
screaming as he freefalls at speeds of over 100mph. Don't worry he won't die. He'll be attached to an experienced sky diver who will bring him back to solid ground. A great way to spend a day and anyone else who wants to join in can book to jump too.

# For a more relaxed afternoon you could learn to play golf like a pro. Ok, after one day you probably won't be entering the British Open but you can be sure to have upped your game. There are lots of good golf clubs offering programmes for small parties that include a lesson, light lunch and a game all as one deal.

Evening Entertainment

With the daytime activity taken care of, next comes the evening entertainment.

For a Stag Night, the evening entertainment usually wants to be lively as it's a chance to let rip. So here's some ideas for fun stag nights you can all remember - as long as you don't drink so much you lose your memory!

# Go and have a right laugh at a comedy club. Some of the clubs offer packages where you can get VIP entrance, a meal, 3 comedians and a club afterwards. This means your stag party can drink, laugh and have fun on the dance floor and do it all under one roof.

# If fine dining is your groom's thing then some restaurants offer theme nights where the stag party get to eat at the posh restaurant and then get VIP entrance to a top night club. This means you get to eat like stars and then get to jump the nightclub queue as well. Cool huh?

# How about a disco on the Thames? Ride along the Thames and dance the night away on a Disco Cruise. This is typically a buffet style dinner as you sail down the Thames, then the music cranks up and you can have your own DJ
spinning the tunes as you party on the water.

# If you fancy something with a Latin Flavour, how about a Latin night? Get a dance lesson followed by an evening of food, drinks and more Latin dancing to the latest Salsa grooves. Impress the senoritas with your Ricky Martin snake hips and cool Salsa moves.

# Finally if you fancy something really exotic then you may want to put a smile on your single friends faces [and looks of worry on the faces of the wives of your married mates then how about a stag night at a premier table dancing venue? If sophisticated elegant ladies willing to dance naked for you at your table is your thing, then table dancing clubs are the place to be - but remember no touching!
